Somerset PTSA Chinese Drums Club 2023-24 Spring Session

This program is provided by Coach BuYun Zhao, who is the director of the Washington Chinese Orchestra. She aims to advocate and promote traditional Chinese music to the Western world. Playing the Chinese Drum allows individuals to connect with traditional Chinese culture and heritage, foster social interaction and teamwork in group performance. Drumming also helps improve the player’s physical coordination, reduce stress, improve cognitive abilities such as concentration, memory and provide physical fitness as well.

1 through 5 grades are welcome to join drums club. Our club vision is to let the students have chance to perform in the future and promote traditional Chinese Drums music to the Western world.

Day: Wednesdays 

Time:  3:00pm - 4:00pm  

Dates: 4/17,4/24,5/1,5/8,5/15,5/22, 5/29, 6/5,6/12(Total of 9 Sessions)

Registration Process

Not included: drum equipment. You can purchase a wooden drum pad set like this from Amazon or Temu for lessons. Please consult with Coach Zhao first if you want to purchase an actual Chinese drum. Please contact the club chair if you are interested in registering your child for the club.

We highly recommend that you maintain an active PTSA membership.

Somerset PTSA member early registration opens at 10am Thursday, March 28. Please purchase a membership prior to starting the registration process. Create/Renew PTSA Membership. (Please note that new memberships may take up to 24 hours to be reflected on the website. )

General registration opens at 10am Friday, March 29. This registration will be opened to all families in Somerset at this time.

Please check and update your child's grade and teacher's name prior to registration through My Account. 

Cost: The tuition rate is $285(with an additional 3% transaction fee that will be added during the checkout)

There is a small chance that this needs to be adjusted if the enrollment number is lower than expected.

Effective January 1, 2024, all tuition received will be allocated to the Somerset PTSA After School fund. These funds will be applied towards various purposes, including Club activities, teachers/mentors/coaches cost, materials and equipment, building usage fees, janitorial services, insurance, and other costs related to Club activities.

In the event of any surplus at the end of each session, the excess funds will be redirected to the Somerset PTSA general fund. This general fund will contribute to supporting PTSA's overall activities, including grants for the Somerset GSA, Curriculum enrichment grants, and so on.

Payment Method

Tuition fee of $285 will be collected during registration. You will be redirected to PayPal at the end to submit payment information.

Refunds are on a case-by-case basis and are not guaranteed. You agree that you are registering for this program with no expectation of receiving any refund should you choose to withdraw your child.

Program Enrollment Capacity

Minimum: 8 Maximum:12 (Please note that one spot will be reserved for the Club Chair, if applicable.)

Parent Participation

Parents must be available to attend at least one sessions during the year for each enrolled student to assist the coaches. This participation is required. Parents will help to run the class and make sure rooms are clean at the end of class.

The SignUp Genius is set up with all the sessions. It is a first-come, first-serve basis so please sign up for the dates that work best for your schedule. After Jan 8th, in order for us to have at least two volunteers per session, we will assign dates to parents who have not signed up.

Parents must complete the Bellevue School District Volunteer background check and check-in at the Somerset Office on their volunteer day.

As a chair, your responsibilities will include:

  1. Managing Parent Volunteers: This involves creating a sign-up sheet for parent volunteers to assist with the class.

  2. Communication with Parents: Sending out emails to parents regarding class information to keep them informed.

  3. Addressing Parent Inquiries: Responding to any questions or concerns that parents may have by email.

Coaches

Coach BuYun Zhao has over 30 years of teaching Chinese instruments experience. Her technical skill on the Yang-Qin is unsurpassed and she is equally skilled in the Chinese Drum,Pi-Pa and Gu-Zheng. She has taught many Chinese musical instruments since 1990 to a vast number of students and many of her students have gone on to become distinguished musicians and music teachers themselves in the Pacific Northwest.
