Math Adventure

Math Adventures are math-oriented puzzle events for 1st - 5th graders

With disaster looming, small teams of students and their parent coach must each solve a set of puzzles to save the day. A party awaits everyone to celebrate their victory. The events are not competitive, and no winners are declared.

Teams: The adventures are designed for teams of 4 students of roughly even ability level. Teams of 2-5 can play, but may need to modify their approach to accommodate the puzzle structures.

Calendar: There are two puzzle adventures – the Friday evenings of March 2nd and June 1st, 2012, from 5:30 until 9:00pm. Curriculum: The math topics are based on Singapore Math’s “Primary Math” curricula. We offer puzzle sets for levels 2, 3, 4 and 5. The March adventure is built around the “A” topics of each level. The June adventure is built around the “B” topics. Teams may participate at any level they like, regardless of actual grade. Thus, students may “play up” a level for challenge, or “play down” a level for review.

Eligibility: Teams may come from any Bellevue elementary school, or indeed from outside BSD.

Additional Team Study: We invite parents to use the Math Adventures as the culminations of extra math study during the year. A number of teams meet monthly or weekly to practice their math skills and learn new topics. This can be good practice for Math Olympiad in 5th grade and beyond. However, we also encourage all students to participate in the adventures, even if it is the only extra-curricular math they do all year. The point is to see how much fun math can be.

Resources for Study: Parent coaches who would like to do extra studying with their students are encouraged to use Singapore Math’s “Primary Math” textbooks and workbooks for guidance. Books can be purchased from a number of retailers, or visit www.singaporemath.com.

Requirements: Each team must provide its own parent coach, as well as a second parent to work a volunteer shift at each adventure. Cost is $25 per student for both adventures. Scholarships are available for Somerset students in need. A Parent Meeting will take place on Wednesday, October 19th at 7pm in the Somerset Library.
