Room Parent Information
One of the things that really make our school work so well is parent
volunteers. Students, teachers and PTSA activities all rely on the time
and talents our wonderful parent community to benefit the students and
the school. In the past we have had one focal point per classroom,
called a room parent. We have added some new roles this year as detailed
below. This should help spread the work load from one or two parents to
several more, and give the opportunity for involvement at different
levels.
We are asking for parents to step forward and help with these
activities.
• Room Parent (RP) is the main contact for the teacher and
parents to help coordinate class parties, activities, handle class
funds, and teacher appreciation efforts. The room parent usually
recruits other parents to help with these activities and is not expected
to do all of the work. The time commitment is spread throughout the
year.
• Auction Parent (AP) is the liaison between the classroom and
the Auction Committee. The auction parent will be responsible for
creating the classroom project (with help from others in the classroom),
raising awareness of the auction within the classroom, and coordinating
communication and fundraising efforts with the parents. The time
commitment is focused from October through February, as the auction is
in March. Click here to
see who the Auction parent is for your classroom.
• Young Scientist Parent (YSP) is the liaison between the
classroom and the Young Scientist Committee. The YSP will be responsible
for recruiting a “scientist” (science oriented) for a classroom
presentation and working with the YS Committee to coordinate activities
and communication with the parents in your classroom. The time
commitment is focused from October/November through the Science week and
should be limited to securing the speaker and coordinating requests from
the Science Committee.
The teachers will be asking for parent volunteers for these, and
possibly other classroom specific roles on their curriculum night later
in the month. Please think about what you have to offer in terms of your
talents and time, and consider volunteering for one of these positions.
One option you may consider is to volunteer as a team with one or more
other parents for these roles. It certainly spreads the efforts around,
gives more parents the opportunity to be involved and it is allot of fun
as well. If you have any questions or comments, please feel free to
contact me anytime. I would be happy to discuss these opportunities with
you.
