Math Olympiad

Math Olympiad is an excellent opportunity for 5th graders to practice and demonstrate mathematical problem solving skills by working in a team of no more than four students. The students form teams, with assistance from the Math Olympiad committee, if necessary. Ideally, each team consists of students who have about the same skill level in math so that all students can contribute to their team and benefit from the program.

Each team will need a parent or high school student coach. Books will be available for checkout from the Somerset PTSA, as well as online resources at the WSMC Math Olympiad web site. Practices are held at times determined by each team.

The annual competition will be held on Saturday May 5, 2012 from 8:00am to 2:30pm at:

Kent-Meridian High School
10020 SE 256th Street
Kent, WA 98030-6408

All team members must commit to attending this event and be willing to practice with their team on a regular basis outside of school hours. The May competition involves working on a one-hour long problem, and five 20-minute short answer tests in the following areas:

  • Number sense
  • Measurement
  • Geometric sense
  • Probability and statistics
  • Algebraic sense

Membership Fee: The participation cost per student is $20 (or $80 for a four-person team). This will cover the cost of supplies and registration for the team at the competition in May. The registration deadline has passed. If you have any questions, please send an e-mail message to SomersetMathOlympiad@yahoo.com.

Subscribe to announcements and other timely information by sending an e-mail message with your child's name and teacher's name to SomersetMathOlympiad@yahoo.com.
